SUPPORT FOR

Primary Care Providers

Pediatricians and primary care providers are often the first professionals families turn to when concerns arise. Refer Medi-Cal eligible children and youth for support.

Mental health is an essential part of a child's overall health.

Children and teens may express emotional or behavioral challenges in different ways. Recognizing changes early can help families access the right support and resources.

Signs to Look For

Consider a behavioral health referral when patients present with:

  • Persistent anxiety or depressive symptoms

  • Behavioral concerns affecting home or school functioning

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Trauma exposure

  • Family stressors impacting development

  • Somatic complaints without a clear medical cause

  • Social withdrawal or significant changes in functioning

Why Referrals Matter

Many children experiencing emotional distress never receive specialized treatment. Early referral to mental health services can improve long-term developmental and health outcomes.
